A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's major government projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.
The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose term finished the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The development of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its role in public works. They were completed at an rapid speed, beating expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also raised persistent questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party urged an urgent halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."
In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital initiatives.
