A recent study suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a major health publication points out that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals using these drugs need to be informed of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a reversion to original weight within about one and a half years.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with other pills.
The team note that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically see a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Experts suggest the way of the jabs accounts for the heightened weight return.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden return of hunger.
"I experienced something flipping and you become starving," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Use is higher among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss relies on combined behavioural management.
