The Himalayan nation's Political Landscape Sees Significant Partnership Formed By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The September uprising was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Political Partnership

According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Discussions Underway

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several major political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
